India had been on my travel list for years. As a single woman over 50, I was looking for a destination that offered not just beauty and culture, but also safety, spirituality, and that magical spark of adventure. India surprised me in the best ways — with its incredible hospitality, deep-rooted traditions, and places that felt both energising and peaceful.

If you’re a woman like me — confident, curious, and craving meaningful travel — here are the best places in India for solo women over 50, based on my own experiences and the places I found most enriching and comfortable.

1. Rishikesh – Finding Peace in the Foothills

My journey began in Rishikesh, known as the Yoga Capital of the World. Nestled by the River Ganges with the Himalayas in the distance, it was the perfect place to breathe deeply and just be.

What I loved:

  • The peaceful ashrams where I joined yoga and meditation classes.

  • Sitting by the river at sunset, watching the aarti (ceremonial prayers).

  • Meeting other women travellers on spiritual journeys of their own.

2. Udaipur – A Dream of Lakes and Palaces

Udaipur stole my heart. With its majestic palaces and shimmering lakes, this romantic city felt like walking through a painting.

What I loved:

  • A calming boat ride on Lake Pichola at twilight.

  • Exploring the City Palace and taking in its grandeur.

  • Staying in a heritage haveli turned boutique hotel with stunning rooftop views.

3. Kerala – Slow Living and Soulful Waters

In Kerala, I found a slower pace of life. Between the gentle backwaters, coconut groves, and Ayurvedic wellness centres, I felt incredibly nourished — body and soul.

What I loved:

  • A houseboat cruise in Alleppey, gently gliding through the palm-lined waters.

  • A week-long Ayurvedic retreat with daily massages and delicious vegetarian meals.

  • The friendliness of locals and the rich cultural traditions.

4. Pondicherry – A French Escape in South India

Wandering through Pondicherry’s quaint streets, I felt like I’d stepped into a peaceful corner of southern France. It was perfect for solo days filled with art, books, and croissants.

What I loved:

  • The French Quarter’s pastel-coloured buildings and bougainvillaea-lined streets.

  • Long walks along the sea promenade.

  • A day trip to Auroville, where I meditated under the Matrimandir dome.

Travelling to Dharamshala, the home of the Dalai Lama, gave me an opportunity to explore Tibetan culture and Buddhist teachings in a stunning mountain setting.

What I loved:

  • Attending a public teaching by Tibetan monks.

  • Morning walks in the misty hills.

  • A quiet retreat where I could reflect, write, and enjoy solitude without ever feeling lonely.

6. Goa – Beaches, Books, and Bliss

While Goa is famous for its parties, I found the south to be perfect for older travellers like me. Peaceful beaches, yoga, and sunset strolls? Absolutely.

What I loved:

  • Relaxing on Palolem Beach with a good book and fresh seafood.

  • Joining a yoga class under a thatched roof by the sea.

  • Exploring Portuguese-influenced architecture and quiet churches.

8. Varanasi – A Journey of the Spirit

Nothing prepared me for Varanasi — chaotic, sacred, and utterly unforgettable. While it can be overwhelming, I found it to be a deeply moving place once I slowed down and let it in.

What I loved:

  • The sunrise boat ride on the Ganges, watching the city wake up.

  • Listening to ancient chants at the evening Ganga Aarti.

  • Observing life and death side by side, which gave me a new perspective on time and legacy.

9. Coorg – Misty Mornings in Coffee Country

Coorg, tucked away in Karnataka’s hills, was one of the most peaceful parts of my journey. The fresh mountain air and coffee-scented mornings made it a restful retreat.

What I loved:

  • Staying in a family-run coffee estate homestay where I felt truly at home.

  • Walking through lush plantations and spotting exotic birds.

  • Sipping freshly brewed coffee while journaling on the verandah.

10. Mumbai – Culture, Contrasts and Confidence

Finally, Mumbai. Vibrant and fast-paced, yet full of unexpected moments of calm. It reminded me that cities can be empowering for solo women — especially those who enjoy the arts, food, and history.

What I loved:

  • Watching the sunset at Marine Drive with chai in hand.

  • Discovering hidden art galleries in Kala Ghoda.

  • Sampling everything from spicy street food to gourmet vegetarian meals.

My Tips for Fellow Solo Women Over 50 Travelling in India

  • Dress comfortably and modestly – it helped me blend in and feel more respected.

  • Trust your instincts – India is mostly kind and warm, but always listen to your gut.

  • Book well-reviewed stays – boutique hotels, women-only hostels and homestays felt safest.

  • Stay connected – getting a local SIM card helped with maps and bookings.

  • Embrace the unexpected – sometimes, the unplanned moments are the most magical.
